NEST Press Conference Recap -
Updated Smoke alarm, replaced Dropcam Pro
By Jimmy with JimsReviewRoom - _June 17th, 2015
Today, NEST Labs hosted their Press conference with new products and updates across the board after Google acquired the company January 4th, of 2014.
Nest Labs introduced "Smart" products for your home, offering digitally controlled and monitored thermostats and a smoke and carbon monoxide detector. The philosophy is having a connected home with products working with each other, providing the end-user with information at the finger tips.
Nest had also purchased DropCam, a wireless at-home monitoring camera using Wi-fi. Dropcam has done wonderful and when I personally reviewed other at home monitoring cameras, the video quality is still the best on Dropcam from my experience.
NEW SMOKE DETECTOR
But with that being said, here's the new products and upgrades.
First up is a second generation "Nest Protect." Still in its square-like style, the new Protect will offer Split-Spectrum sensors for better and faster detection of slow and small fires. Steam Check is a new feature with a built-in humidity sensor, differentiating steam versus smoke. And one incident I always run across, when my home smoke alarm goes off, I have to find the broom and push the center button. With the new "App Silence" option, you can silence your smoke alarm with your smartphone. Talk about convenience, especially with high-ceilings. Nest Labs has also stated the unit is designed to last 10years versus 7 on the previous model.
With all this being said, Nest says this will be available for $99 next month.
I've personally owned the DropCam Pro for over a year now. I personally use it in our babies room and its been great! It is missing some features like local-recording which I desperately need instead of buying Dropcam/Nest Cloud recording subscription.
Nest also unveiled the Nest Cam. The replacement to the DropCam pro.
The unit is stronger being made of Zinc alloy, and now it features a magnetic base.
Nest Cam will feature 1080p, 8 built-in infrared LED's for "Premium Night vision" per Nest with similar sound and motion detection we've seen on the previous DropCam Pro model. For security, Nest says the cam will offer Bank-Level security.
At the end of the Press Conference, no mention of local-recording unfortunately.
The Nest Cam will cost $200 and is available today.
Nest also stated they will be offering Safety Rewards, linking Nest Protect users with home insurance providers.
During the press conference, Nest announced Liberty Mutual and American Family insurance are the first with hopefully more to come for other homeowners. It would be great to see some savings on home owners insurance!
The App has been streamlined offering easier usability and with an emphasis on a Nest ecosystem. All Nest and existing DropCam products, they will work together and all data will be shown on this one app.
Looks promising for those who were and are interested in the Smart home products.
The new additions to the Smoke detector is very favorable in helping to distinguish different fires. I'll admit, I'm very bummed as I didn't hear any announcement about local recording. Its odd considering many other competitors are offering this feature. Indeed its straying away from their paid cloud storage, but its a feature I know many would like.
